Fernmania's Resident Platypus

dam

Fernmania's Ling Siding Depot which has two dams for water supply storage, is fortunate to have a resident platypus that can sometimes be seen swimming about.

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with echidnas, they are the only monotremes on earth, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.

Although not uncommon the platypus is quite shy and many people have never seen one, though they may be living near a platypus habitat.

The platypus, which has a beak like a duck and a body more like a beaver is a most unlikely looking creature and when the first pelt was sent to Europe in 1798, scientists there thought it was a hoax.
